Osterer Center for Discovery in Wallingford, Connecticut



Osterer Center for Discovery (OCFD) offers an education and recreation-based curriculum for adults that is structured around person-centered interests and goals. OCFD aims to support program participants in developing social, interpersonal, functional, communication, language, motor and employment readiness skills.

Activities include horticulture, culinary arts, health and wellness, maintenance, computer skills, money management, art and life skills. Each skill is developed through person-centered planning, hands on teaching and exposure to various community activities. Social interactions are encouraged throughout the day. Program participants also have an opportunity to engage in recreational activities such as exercising, team sports and performing arts. The program operates between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. All individuals work with staff members who are dedicated and trained to provide guidance and supervision so each participant can obtain their individualized goals.

PERSON-CENTERED PRINCIPLES

OCFD Programs are based on person-centered principles. The person-centered planning process is directed by each individual in conjunction with his or her interdisciplinary team. Through this process, the team identifies how each individual wants to live and the type of supports that are congruent with each individual’s lifestyle choices. Each person-centered plan connects the essentials of daily living with practical life experiences. Community engagement is essential in advancing independence, productivity, and full citizenship of all people with disabilities.

GROUP DAY SERVICES

Throughout the day, individuals have a choice to participate in activities such as art, music, horticulture, wellness, computer research, animal care and a variety of recreational activities. The computer lab is equipped with computer stations where individuals can research topics of interest or enjoy social media under the supervision of staff. The wellness room is equipped with recreational and sports equipment that individuals can utilize with staff guidance and supervision, where the focus is on learning and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In the art room, each participant is encouraged to express their individual creativity utilizing a variety of materials. A vocal group is available for those who are interested in expressing themselves through music.

GOALS UNLIMITED TRANSITION PROGRAM

Goals Unlimited is geared toward adults ages 21 and up who are interested in taking the next step into employment. This program aims to develop and retain skills that will prepare each individual for future employment, internship, or volunteerism. Program participants follow an innovative curriculum that is based on learning modules and connects the essentials of daily living with practical life experiences. The learning modules include the development of social skills, safety in the community, interview skills, resume writing, and developing other prevocational skills such as appropriate communication skills in a work place. OCFD provides round trip transportation to the volunteer, internship, and job sites. Staff members also provide on-site job coaching support

NURSING

OCFD has access to a nurse-practitioner who provides guidance and consultation.

TRANSPORTATION

Based on necessity, OCFD provides round trip transportation for program activities. Roundtrip transportation may be provided to OCFD for those individuals who reside in family homes nearby the center; Transportation is also provided for community activities and field trips that are scheduled during regular program hours. All staff are trained and certified to operate agency vehicles.
