Saturday Explorers is a fun and engaging weekend program designed for children and adults living with disabilities to connect, create, and grow together. Each Saturday from 10am to 2pm, participants spend four hours enjoying a wide variety of activities from morning exercises, yoga, meditation, arts and crafts, cooking, STEM projects, and sensory play, as well as outdoor time at our adaptive playground Harmony Park, and summer swimming at our on-campus pool. Activities are held on our Rye Brook campus, with occasional off-site excursions. Each activity is guided by a leader and adapted to fit everyone’s needs to ensure meaningful participation.
We start our morning with group exercise in the gym followed by yoga and meditation to cool down and set the tone for the day. Afterward, participants engage in different activities such as arts and crafts, STEM projects, and sensory play. Projects have included tie dyeing t-shirts, making sensory balls with rice and flour, and paint-and-sip sessions. Cooking is also a favorite activity. Afternoons include outdoor walks, karaoke and dancing sessions.
Explorers celebrate holidays and special events in creative and memorable ways, including visits from volunteers who lead stories, crafts and festive activities. Our “Halloweekend” party is always a hit with costumes, music, games and activities. During the winter session we celebrate with ornament decorating, DIY trees, and snow globes. This past summer, our volunteers brought the beach to us, reading an ocean-themed story, helping participants build underwater scenes with pipe cleaner coral and fish, and decorating cookies. We hosted a toy drive to give back to CPW.
Each Saturday is filled with laughter, movement, and friendship and we look forward to welcoming even more explorers! Follow this link for our 2026 flyer.
Building on the Saturday Explorers program, CPW hosts an adaptive recreation program during the school breaks. With a focus on increasing physical activity, the program engages children, teenagers and young adults in adaptive sports and creative arts. The program is open to individuals, ages 6 and up, on the autism spectrum as well as those with differing abilities. Follow this link for more information and 2026 program dates.
OPWDD Waivers are accepted for both programs for children who are eligible for services through the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). Private pay and Self-Direction options are also available.
