PREVOCATIONAL SERVICES (COMMUNITY OR SITE BASED)
The Vocational Program offers an educationally based curriculum that is structured around training modules and learning sites in the community. Some of these modules include: Porter Maintenance, Clerical and Basic Life Skills. Each area of training incorporates guest lecturers, field trips and hands on training to enhance development of skills.
LIFE SKILLS
Life Skills is a component of the program that connects the essentials of daily living with practical life experiences. Participants follow an innovative curriculum that uses various learning techniques to address social skills, safety in the community, hygiene and grooming, and self-exploration.
PORTER MAINTENANCE
Porter Maintenance training teaches housekeeping and maintenance techniques to program participants, with an emphasis on safety and health. Interested individuals learn the fundamentals of housekeeping through hands-on demonstration and instruction from support staff. Individuals are trained to adhere to OSHA guidelines related to personal protection and sanitation, as well as the environmental benefits of reducing, reusing, and recycling. Individuals are encouraged to take an active role in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
CPW MARKET PLACE
The Vocational Services program operates the CPW Market Place, open Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Program participants practice retail skills, including: inventory tracking and restocking; conducting point-of-sale transactions;customer service; and product purchases from community outlets and wholesalers. The CP/W Market Place offers food and beverage services to agency employees, visitors and program participants,and is often contracted to cater breakfast for department meetings, staff development seminars, and trainings.
GOALS UNLIMITED (CLERICAL SKILLS)
Clerical skills training provides interested individuals the opportunity to learn general office skills, with additional instruction related to business principles, including: marketing, sales, and research. Goals Unlimited, an on-site enterprise providing clerical support services to the agency, offers its participants the opportunity to develop their computer skills through the use of Microsoft Office and Print Shop software. Goals Unlimited members are contracted to generate business cards for agency employees; create flyers to announce upcoming agency events; and take and fill orders for products sold in the CPW Market Place, including balloons, greeting cards, and other gifts.
FOOD BANK of WESTCHESTER
The Vocational Services program has partnered with the Food Bank of Westchester as a satellite production site for their “Backpack Program.” The program provides local students with a package of food items to be carried home in their backpacks on Fridays to ensure that they and their families have nutritious meals on the weekend. The Vocational Services program participants are responsible for the pick-up, packing, and delivery of the food packages to local schools and community organizations for distribution to students in need.
